How to Choose CCTV Camera Resolution: 2MP vs 4MP vs 8MP Guide

Understanding CCTV Camera Resolution: A Plain Language Guide

Resolution is one of the most important — and most confusing — specifications when buying a CCTV camera. Higher numbers always sound better, but what do they mean in practice? How much detail can you actually see at 2MP vs 4MP vs 8MP? And is the extra cost worth it?

What is Camera Resolution?

Camera resolution describes how many pixels (dots) make up the image. More pixels = more detail in the image, which means you can see sharper detail and zoom into specific areas of the footage without it becoming blurry.

Common resolutions in CCTV cameras:

  • 2MP (1920×1080): "Full HD" or "1080p" — same resolution as most TVs
  • 4MP (2560×1440): "Quad HD" or "2K" — 4 times the pixels of HD
  • 5MP (2592×1944): Common in CP Plus cameras
  • 8MP (3840×2160): "4K Ultra HD" — 4 times the pixels of Full HD

Real-World Distance for Face Identification

The most practical question: at what distance can you identify a person's face?

ResolutionFace Identification DistanceNumber Plate Reading Distance
2MP (1080p)5–8 metres3–5 metres
4MP10–12 metres6–8 metres
8MP (4K)15–20 metres10–15 metres

Note: These distances assume a standard 2.8mm–3.6mm fixed lens. Varifocal lenses can extend these distances significantly.

Storage Requirements by Resolution

Higher resolution means larger file sizes, which means you need more storage. Here's what a 1TB surveillance HDD stores with H.265+ compression:

Resolution1 Camera4 Cameras
2MP continuous~120 days~30 days
4MP continuous~60 days~15 days
8MP continuous~30 days~7–8 days

This means a 4-camera 8MP system needs at least 2TB for 15+ days storage, compared to 1TB for a 4MP system.

Which Resolution is Right for You?

Choose 2MP (1080p) if:

  • Budget is the primary concern
  • Cameras are used for indoor monitoring at close range
  • You want to maximise storage duration
  • You're adding cameras to an existing 1080p system

Choose 4MP if:

  • You want the best balance of quality and cost — our most recommended for Kerala homes
  • Cameras will monitor medium distances (gates, driveways, shop floors)
  • You want to identify faces at 10 metres
  • Starting a new installation from scratch

Choose 8MP (4K) if:

  • Wide-area surveillance where you need to digitally zoom into details
  • Critical security points (main gate, cashier, ATM surrounds)
  • Number plate capture at longer distances
  • You want maximum evidential quality footage
  • Budget allows (cameras are 2–3x more expensive)

Practical Recommendation for Kottayam Homes

Based on thousands of installations across Kottayam and the wider Kottayam district, our recommendation is:

  • Main gate and driveways: 4MP or 8MP with varifocal lens
  • Front/back entrance: 4MP fixed lens
  • Indoor areas: 2MP or 4MP depending on room size
  • Perimeter/wide areas: 8MP or PTZ camera

A typical Kerala home with 4 cameras works well with a mix: one 8MP at the gate, and three 4MP cameras elsewhere. This provides the best combination of detail where it matters most and cost-effectiveness elsewhere.
